Homeland Biodiversity Bee Pollinator Project
with Apleona and Abbotts Diagnostics
Homeland Plus Sligo are delighted to announce partnership with Apleona and Abbotts Diagnostics in the development of a Bee Pollinator Programme. The project is an ongoing initiative by Homeland, Apleona, and Abbotts Diagnostics which is currently in phase one of three phases. Upon completion, this project will see the design and implementation of a large Bee Pollinator Garden on the grounds of Abbotts Diagnostics Sligo.
Phase 1 of 3 – Design, planning and landscape clearance.
Arlene McGoldrick and the team at Homeland Plus Sligo have been tasked with providing materials, plants, and best advice regarding pollinator shrubs and perennials most suited to the area. The project is being rolled out in 3 phases in Abbotts Diagnostics Sligo, with the aim of incorporating the programme into other sites throughout the North-West as part of the Biodiversity Bee Pollinator Project. Greentown Environmental have also came on board the project, providing wildflower seed and manual labour in terms of landscaping, placing stone, and sowing wildflower.

This is an exciting project which has proved very successful in bringing colour to the site for not only the bees, but staff as well. Creating Bee Pollinator zones and increasing biodiversity is an essential task, especially in today’s climate, and so we are delighted for the opportunity to be part of such a project. At least 75% of the plants on earth require assistance with pollinating, and with a third of Ireland’s wild bee species in jeopardy of extinction, it is important that we do what we can, together, to restore healthy pollinator levels. This project is a great initiative which shows the power of teamwork – whether it is within a community, business, family, or school, everyone can help to make a change.
Recently, our colleagues at Aurivo Animal Feed Mill have also been working hard on their own Bee Pollinator Project. Anita, from Homeland Ballaghaderreen picked a beautiful range of pollinators, such as buddleia, coreopsis, and heathers - to encourage butterflies. A selection of other native species was also set in this area and mowing ceased over the past few months, which allowed plants such as ox daisy and red clover to flourish. This in-turn allowed for an increase in biodiversity and pollinator insect numbers.
