Moss Removal Tips

Moss is a type of flowerless plant, often found in clumps and blankets in water-logged, shaded areas within your garden. They multiply rapidly within the right environment, which is why it is important to target moss early every year. Throughout mid-autumn and early winter, when temperatures begin to plummet and rainfall rises, moss will begin to take over if given the chance. It can completely cover garden walls, pathways, drives, and garden furniture – meaning these surfaces become and eye sore, as well as being dangerous and slippy. It is important to note that although scrubbing or power washing will physically remove the moss, doing either of these along will not remove, but may even spread the spores more. That is why we have recommended a combination of tips for each common area of your garden.

Garden Furniture

  • Begin by applying a small amount of Homeland Tarmac & Algae Concentrate Cleaner, diluted as required, to a small area of your furniture.
  • Next, providing the solution appears suitable to your furniture type, thoroughly soak the surface area and brush on using a scrubbing brush and a pair of garden gloves. The dilute can also be sprayed on depending on your preference. In this case, take safety precautions by wearing a good spraying mask.
  • In ideal conditions, the solution should be applied in dry conditions, without the expectation of rain.
  • Dead algae can be brushed off again once 3-4 days passes, allowing your furniture to remain moss-free for the winter and helping to remove any stains. In severe cases of moss growth, a second application may be necessary.

Lawncare

  • Give your lawn an Autumn feed, leaving it stronger heading into those dark winter months and reducing moss build up to ensure fast recovery in Spring.
  • Use Homeland Lawn Hero which provides a combination of essential nutrients and minerals to quickly nourish lawns, strengthen the sward and suppress moss.
  • Remember, the less moss in the lawn over the winter, the less moss to deal with in Spring! Homeland Lawn Hero is an easy, fast acting preventative - simply dilute with water at the required rate and apply via sprayer or watering can.

      Walls & Pavement

  • In order to prevent the persistent build-up of moss on walls and pavements around your house, it is best to control it in Autumn and Spring.
  • Use Homeland Tarmac and Algae Cleaner to remove moss from paths, patios, walls, and drives without the need for power washing.
  • Dilute at the recommended rate and spray/brush on when no rain is expected.
  • It will begin to take effect after 3-4 days. Dead moss can then be brushed off if necessary. Homeland Tarmac & Algae Cleaner can be used on tarmac, timber fences, slate/tile roofs and all stone or concrete surfaces.
