Entonem provides a natural biological control solution for Vine Weevil with entomopathogenic nematodes. Entonem contains the nematode species Steinernema feltiae. This species has a wide temperature range and can be used effectively once soil temperatures are above 8°C.

What are Beneficial Nematodes?

Nematodes are naturally occurring soil dwelling micro-organisms that can be used to control insect pests including Vine weevil larvae.

What are the Symptoms of Vine Weevil?

The larvae feed on the roots of plants causing significant damage, often leading to plant death, symptoms include the plants looking like they need watering/wilting.

Vine weevil larvae are found in and around the roots of plants. Adult weevils feed on leaves with damage showing as notches or half-moon shaped cuts on the edges of leaves.

All adult Vine Weevils are female and can lay a high number of eggs, which develop into plant damaging larvae.

How do Beneficial Nematodes Work?

Nematodes enter the larvae via a natural opening like the mouth and feed on the contents of the Vine weevil larvae. They release a natural bacterium inside the larvae, which kills it. Infected larvae will often change colour and will be completely broken down by the nematodes 7-21 days post infection.

Are there any side effects of Using Nematodes?

Vine Weevil Killer nematodes have no negative effects on plants, humans, birds, fish or mammals.

How to Store Nematodes?

·        Upon receipt, store in a standard fridge at 4°C

·        Nematodes are delivered with reusable cool packs. Place these in the lowest section of the fridge or preferably in a freezer.

·        Upon Sale, package nematode box and 1 cool pack in a padded envelope.

·        Ensure cool pack and nematode box are separated by packing paper/light cardboard sheet.

How Can I Apply Nematodes?

Entonem can be applied with watering can, hose end sprayer nematode applicators or knapsack sprayers. If using hose end applicators or knapsack remove any filters prior to use.

Application Periods

·                  Two main risk periods but not limited to

§  Mid-March to Mid-May

§  Mid-August to Mid-October

·                  Soil temperature influences the efficacy of the nematodes. Use Entonem above 8°C

How to Use Nematodes

·        Store Nematodes in fridge at 4°C in a normal household fridge until time of application.

·        Do not apply in bright sunny conditions as UV light will kill the nematodes.

·        Wait until a dull day or preferably the evening time.

·        Ensure soil or compost is moist at time of application (not saturated!)
